MOTOCROSS and BMX enthusiasts in the Amman Valley are calling for a junior bike track in Cwmaman.

A petition set up last week by Cwmaman Motocross and BMX Group is looking to build a track within the Cwmaman area with the hope of attracting more income and visitors to the Amman Valley.

The petition says that such a track would "bring benefits to the young people who enjoy the sport" and "help to reduce the instances of illegal riding on roads, footpaths, National Parkland and private property."

The group believes as there is no such track in the area, should the project receive local backing, there could be scope for increased visitors to the community which in turn will help support local businesses and create jobs.

Cwmaman Community Development Officer Robert Venus said he was aware of the petition, which he says has the initial backing of the town council.

He said: "The petition is more of a way of gauging public interest rather than a demand for the town council to act.

"The great thing about Cwmaman town council is that they are open to all sorts of ideas and are happy to discuss and take on board every opportunity put forward.

"I am keen to highlight the petition at a forthcoming town council meeting."

Mr Venus said the idea could see people pursue their passion in a safe environment and give people the opportunity to progress.

He added: "There are many places around for the football and rugby players plus tennis and cricket but nothing for the bmx and motocross riders.

"This kind of track would be ideal for them. We have seen a number of people from the Amman Valley go onto outstanding sporting careers. "We could have the next big biker in our area, but they need to be able to have somewhere to go and practice - this could be the perfect platform for them."

Since appearing on the change.org website the petition has received 170 signatures.
