AN AMMANFORD car park is to be given a new entrance to help relieve the traffic problems at the town's Wilko crossing.

Carmarthenshire County Council's Executive Board Member for Transport has revealed first stage plans that will see a new entrance created to accommodate the relocation of the crossing point with a new pedestrian controlled crossing installed at its new location.

Although details of the plans have yet to be revealed it is thought the new entrance will be situated on the link road between Carregaman Lane roundabout and Heol Wallasey roundabout, at the bottom of Quay Street.

The latest news has been welcomed by County Councillor Deian Harries who has been calling for changes at the busy crossing.

County Councillor Deian Harries said: "This is wonderful news for the town and something I have been eager to see happen for a number of years now.

"There has been a number of incidents witnessed at the crossing - some very serious - so I welcome this latest news.

"Motorists leaving the car park are immediately on the crossing and it is difficult for them to see if someone is crossing.

"Hopefully closing the entrance and relocating will help reduce the build up of traffic at this point."

Ammanford town councillors have been campaigning for changes at the crossing and town Mayor Andrew Lewis said he was happy to see something finally happening.

"Obviously I haven't seen the plans yet, but it surely has to be a good thing for motorists and pedestrians in the town.

"I will be keen to see exactly what is planned and until I see them I cannot comment fully on the new road layout, but I am happy to finally see movement."

The council say the works are scheduled to start during the summer holidays in order to minimise traffic disruption as much as possible.
