AS AMMANFORD becomes the first Dementia Friendly town in Carmarthenshire, one local business has described how they are ready to take part.

The team at Catherine Blair on College Street have all taken the special session and have made important changes to the shop in order to make shopping there a positive experience for people with dementia.

Owner Val Thomas is also chair of the new Ammanford Dementia Friendly steering group- which was launched a couple of weeks ago.

“The idea behind Dementia Friendly Ammanford is that we as a community become a patient, tolerant and kind place for people with dementia to spend time in,” says Val.

The project- pioneered by Alzheimer’s Society - offers a special session which teaches participants how they can help people with the condition and make the town a welcome haven. A pin badge is then provided so people can recognise those who have taken part.

From recognising when people need a little extra help to understanding how dementia can affect a person- for example the way dementia changes perception- the session provides a helpful education.

Says Val: “One small thing we’ve done is to replace our door mats. Black door mats can appear to some as holes in the ground so they won’t come in,our new cream mats address that.

“We have subtle wallpaper as busy patterns can appear to move for some and that can be very frightening and shiny floors can seem wet. A lot of people with dementia can also suffer from tinnitus and so loud music is distressing.

“And with all our staff having done the session, people will know we have an understanding and will be patient when someone can’t remember their pin or find the right money.”

Two other businesses- Mallards Estate Agents and Ernest G Brooks- have currently completed the session and the aim is to have all businesses in town to do the same.

Sessions take an hour and are free. Funding is also being sourced to help businesses in the purchase of the lighter coloured door mats.

Individuals are also be encouraged to get involved.

Adds Val: “The long term aim is to build upon the strong sense of community in Ammanford and have as many people as possible do the session.

“It would be great that someone with dementia or their carer could see people wearing the pin badges and know they can turn to them for help."
