CARMARTHENSHIRE schools and communities are going bananas in Fairtrade fortnight.

More than 4,800 pupils county wide- that’s 99 schools- have been involved with the Council’s Catering Service actively promoting Fairtrade.

The service especially source Fairtrade bananas and sugar which is used in their home made recipes and desserts.

Catering services manager Helen Bailey said: “The authority is committed to sourcing Fair Trade foods to incorporate within our school menus throughout the year not only in Fair Trade Fortnight.

“There is a wide range of Fairtrade products that our schools are introducing and associated lessons enable children to acknowledge the wider issues surrounding food consumption.”

This week schools have been enjoying a Fairtrade luncheon and the menu has included the choice of homemade beef or vegetable lasagne beef or vegetable bolognaise served with spaghetti, broccoli and garlic bread. This has been followed up with homemade chocolate and Fairtrade banana muffin and Fairtrade orange juice.

Dylan the Dragon popped along to one school near Llanelli to help with the tasting.

Meanwhile in Ammanford- Wales’ first Fairtrade Town- the annual banana split event is set to take place once again.

The event will see a Fairtrade Ammanford create a massive banana split at the Arcade this Friday, March 11 at 5.30pm.

Don’t forget to bring a spoon and get ready to tuck into the tasty treat.
