AN AMMANFORD supermarket is pioneering an initiative that aims to stop the wastage of surplus food.

Tesco Ammanford launched their Food Connection program last week and have linked up with five local charities to take part in this new initiative where their surplus food is donated to a local charity every evening.

With FairShare FoodCloud Tesco can make sure any surplus edible food they have is donated to local charities and community groups working to feed those in need.

FareShare have already matched suitable local charities to their store and are now working with Hafal Ammanford, Hafan Dementia Care, iSmooth Community Café, Hope House - Teen Challenge and Betws Family Centre.

These charities are now collecting surplus food from Tesco Ammanford every evening, seven days a week.

Tesco have already donated a wide range of products like bakery, fruit and veg, eggs and plan to donate chilled products like meat, ready meals and dairy products over the next few weeks.

Alison Jones the store manager said: “This is the biggest single step we’ve taken to cut food waste at Tesco Ammanford and we hope it marks the start of eliminating the need to throw away edible food in our store.

“We are looking forward to having even closer links with our charitable organisations that work within the Ammanford Community through this scheme".
