WHEN it comes to celebrating the best of Welsh tourism, following in the footsteps of two brothers who discovered one of the country’s most iconic attractions was always going to make a big splash.

The team at Dan Yr Ogof -The National Showcave Centre for Wales, decided to mark Wales’ official tourism Week and launch the “Year of Adventure” by convincing an AM to do just that.

South Wales Central AM Andrew Davies visited the Caves today (Monday) and re-enacted the amazing story of how Jeff and Tommy Morgan discovered them in 1912.

The unique event saw the AM joined by Suzy Davies, AM for South Wales West, and Gary Price – the Conservative Candidate for Brecon & Radnorshire.

The Morgan brothers were always fascinated where all the water came from that poured out of the mountainside on their Abercrave farm.

In June 1912 they set off to explore this watery cave mouth equipped with a ball of string, candles, hemp ropes, and a coracle.

Back then, caves were not places rural people normally ventured into and it is interesting to note that Jeff Morgan recorded in his diary that he took with him his old army revolver- indicating how nervous they really were.

Mr Davies “explored” the cave just like the Morgan brother did by using candles, leaving arrow marks on the sandy pathways, and winding out a ball of string behind him so as not to get lost in the labyrinth of dark passageways.

He also donned a replica revolver in his belt.

Again, just like the Morgan brothers, Mr Davies navigated one of the small underground lakes that they explored, crossing it using a Welsh coracle just as they did in 1912.

Wales Tourism week runs until March 6 and this year’s Visit Wales theme is Year of Adventure.

Ashford Price, of the Showcaves, said: “Today’s event was truly an adventure- in Wales’s year of adventures.”
