A PIECE OF Welsh motor sport history is expected to attract serious attention when it goes up for sale at a Christmas antique market.

An original press photograph, taken moments before an infamous car crash on Pendine Sands is going up for grabs at Carmarthen Antiques and Flea Market.

Giulio Foresti was an Italian racing driver whose attempt to break the world landspeed record in his car Djelmo in November, 1927, ended in disaster.

At a speed of 150 miles per hour, the Italian lost control of the of his car.

He skidded and the car somersaulted twice.

The vehicle was wrecked, but miraculously Foresti emerged from the car with just a cut over his eye and an injured arm.

Pendine Sands has a long and illustrious history in speed circles, with numerous record attempts - some successful, some not - having been held there right up to the present day.

The legendary Sir Malcolm Campbell first used the sands on September 25, 1924, and set a then world landspeed record of 146.16 mph in his Sunbeam 350HP car Blue Bird.

Between 1924 and 1927, Campbell made two further visits to Carmarthenshire while Welshman JG Parry-Thomas in his car Babs also attempted the landspeed record twice at Pendine.

Campbell eventually took the record to 174.22mph in February 1927.

On March 3, 1927, Parry-Thomas was killed in a 170mph crash.

Undeterred, Foresti arrived at Pendine later that year to make his unsuccessful record attempt.

On May 7 this year award-winning actor Idris Elba broke the historic “Flying Mile” record, originally set by Campbell, in a Bentley Continental GT Speed. The star of the BBC One series Luther and the hit American show The Wire achieved speeds of 180.361mph.

Meanwhile, champion motorcycle racer and daredevil speedster Guy Martin reached 112mph on a bicycle at Pendine, last year, breaking the British absolute speed record.

The Foresti image will be up for sale at Carmarthen Antiques and Flea Market runs between 10am and 4pm on December 28.
