THE public has just five days left to take up the share offer in a windfarm which feeds all profits back into community groups in the Amman and Swansea valleys.

The two-turbine facility at Mynydd y Gwrhyd 20 miles north of Swansea will produce 4.7 megawatts of power for the benefit of local groups.

The windfarm will be wholly owned by a community society.

Charity Awel Aman Tawe, which has developed the project, has already raised £242,000 and members of the public have until Monday, November 23, to buy £50 shares in the scheme, which hopes to offer a seven per cent return.

Awel Aman Tawe director Dan McCallum said: “We have set up a Community Benefit Society, Awel Co-op, which will wholly own the wind farm and we’d like to invite people to invest in it from as little as £50.

“This will be an opportunity to own some Welsh wind power, take action on climate change and get a return on investment.

“We also want to make sure Welsh money stays in Wales rather than going to the Chancellor – the only way to do that is to buy co-op shares before November 23 before he takes away EIS tax relief from community energy projects.“

AM Jenny Rathbone, who is backing the project, said: ‘This is a fantastic, co-operative way of taking action on climate change in the run up to the UN conference in Paris.

“Awel Co-op is a significant £7.5 million project which is going to lever significant external funding into the Welsh economy.

“Now, the Welsh people have the chance to own it, and ensure that all profits go into other renewable and fuel poverty projects via the charity, Awel Aman Tawe.“

Building work is due to start at the site in March.

“We would like to acknowledge the funders who have helped develop the community wind farm project with us – Welsh Government’s Ynni’r Fro programme and the Robert Owen Community Energy Fund which has been backed by Big Lottery,’ said Mr McCallum.

The Share Offer is open until November 23 although individuals able to pay by BACS transfer up to November 26 to enable investors to claim existing tax relief before it is withdrawn by the government.
