An Ammanford teen has claimed he found a plastic box containing drugs in Betws Park.

Joseph Edward Alfred Smith, of 68 Betws Road, appeared at Llanelli Magistrates Court to admit possessing 0.94 grammes of mephedrone - known as meow - when stopped by police on July 3.

Associate prosecutor Sharon Anderson told magistrates how Smith was spoken to by police at Ammanford Square at 2.20am as he appeared to be intoxicated.

During the course of the conversation the 19-year-old handed over the drugs.

He initially told officers it was "meow" and said it was his.

However, when interviewed Smith said he had found the drugs in the park and had no idea what it was.

"He told the officers he thought it might be cocaine or another Class A drug because it was white," Ms Anderson told the court.

"He said he had not taken any of it and had planned to put some of it in a glass of beer because he had seen someone do it in a movie, but then decided it was a stupid idea."

Hywel Davies, defending, told the court Smith suffered from "borderline personality disorder" and schizophrenia.

"At the time he was told he was to be searched he headed it over and said it was 'meow'," Mr Davies told the court.

Smith was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 towards prosecution costs.

He was also ordered to pay a £180 criminal court charge and a £20 victim surcharge.
