A Pontarddulais woman has been jailed for 21 months for causing the death of a motorcyclist by dangerous driving between Fforest and Llanedi in April, 2014.

Rhiannon Louise Matthews, of Upper Mill, caused the death of Stephen Collins and seriously injured fellow motorcyclist Paul Williams while attempting to carry out “a dangerous manoeuvre” at a “wholly inappropriate” point on the B4297 on April 19.

Matthews, aged 47, appeared at Swansea Crown Court and admitted charges of causing death by dangerous B4297 driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Following her sentencing this morning, Dyfed-Powys Police Roads Policing Sergeant Ian Price said: “Rhiannon Matthews pleaded guilty to causing the death of Stephen Collins by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving to Mr Paul Williams on April 19 2014, between Forest and Llanedi in Carmarthenshire.

“Stephen Collins tragically lost his life because Ms Matthews did not think about the grave danger she presented to other road users when carrying out a dangerous manoeuvre on the exit of a left hand bend that day.

“Mr Williams sustained serious fractures but was fortunate not to have lost his life. Both Mr Collins and Mr Williams were riding their motorcycles when they collided with Ms Matthews van, who was straddling both lanes of the road when she attempted a three point turn at a wholly inappropriate location.

“Today’s sentence of 21 months imprisonment sends a message that Dyfed Powys Police will take positive action against all aspects of dangerous driving.

“My thoughts and condolences remain with Mr Collins family, who have to endure the pain of losing him in these tragic and completely avoidable circumstances.”
