The 49-year-old Penygroes man killed in a road collision with a passing car as he made his way home from Llandeilo on Saturday night has been named locally as former Cross Hands Hotel landlord Ian Williams.

Mr Williams was struck by a red Vauxhall Corsa while walking along the A476 Cross Hands to Llandeilo road near Ffairfach at around 9pm.

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: "At around 9pm on Saturday, August 29, a single vehicle RTC occurred on the A476 just out of Ffairfach, Llandeilo, whereby a male pedestrian was struck by a red Vauxhall Corsa travelling in the same direction.

"The driver of the vehicle stopped and contacted the emergency services but unfortunately the pedestrian died at scene.

"He has been identified as a 49 year old male form the Penygroes area."

The spokesman appealed for any witnesses who might have seen a pedestrian walking along the road or the red Corsa prior to the accident to call 101.

The death was the most serious in a spate of road accidents to have occurred over the past week in Carmarthenshire.

On Sunday, a motorist required hospital treatment after a car overturned on the A40 at Halfway near Llandovery around 9.30pm.

At 2.45am on Bank Holiday Monday, two cars collided on Cwmaman Road in Garnant.

Two people were injured following a collision between a Volkswagen Polo and a Daf lorry on the A48 near Cross Hands last Thursday.

There were further collisions in Newcastle Emlyn, Meidrim, Alltwalis and Pontyberem over the past days.

The incidents come in the wake of a police appeal for greater road safety after it was announced that there had been 26 road deaths in the County between January 1 and August 20.
