A footbridge in Betws Park has been closed on safety grounds following repeated acts of vandalism.

Officers from Carmarthenshire County Council have temporarily sealed off the bridge until it can be made safe for public use.

A spokesman for the authority said that vandals had “purposely knocked holes into the deck and removed the barriers making it unsafe for people to use”.

The incident is the second to have occurred in a matter of weeks with council workers repairing a similar hole at the end of July. Another has now appeared further along the bridge.

Council maintenance staff have now appealed to residents to report any further incidents in a bid to catch the individuals responsible.

Executive Board Member for the Environment Councillor Hazel Evans said: “Our grounds maintenance team do not have a never-ending budget to keep on repairing the bridge and more importantly it is putting people’s safety at risk.

“I don’t know why anyone would get any satisfaction from causing this type of damage, it is just mindless.

“Hopefully by making the public aware we can stop these inconsiderate individuals from causing any further problems.”
