A Caerbryn couple have claimed that their lives have been a misery following the construction of a 250-foot – 77-metre – wind turbine overlooking their back garden.

Mike and Annie Oldbury, of Can-yr-Aderyn, say they feel their quality of life has been destroyed since the turbine was erected two weeks ago.

Mr and Mrs Oldbury also believe their £440,000 home is now unsellable.

The couple – along with other residents of Caerbryn – had spent more than two years battling an application to build the turbine before the scheme was approved by county planners in February.

However, they have been left stunned by the actual impact of the turbine on their lives now that it is working.

“It is absolutely horrendous,” said Mrs Oldbury.

"We thought it would be bad, but nothing like this.

“It has made our lives a misery – it is impossible to grasp just how big it is until you actually see it

“Everywhere we go on our property it is there.”

To make matters worse for the couple, the turbine has been built on top of a 30-metre hill at the bottom of their garden.

“It completely overwhelms our home,” said Mr Oldbury. “There are very few places on our property where you cannot see it.

“It went up all but over night. I went to work one morning and there was no turbine, but by the time I came home that day it was up.

“People think a turbine is quiet, but it sounds like a cross between a washing machine and a jet engine – even with the doors and windows closed we can hear it in every room in the house.

“It is horrendous. It is impossible to describe just how much this is impacting on our lives”

Mrs Oldbury said: “The future seems incredibly bleak for us.

“We asked members of the planning committee to come to our house to see how it would effect us but they refused.

“We moved from Reading to west Wales in search of peace and quiet, but have spent three years fighting this application and now we face this. It is horrific.

“It has made us both ill trying to fight it and to make matters worse our property is now unsellable.”
