WHEELBARROWS hurtled through the Amman Valley last weekend raising cash for charity.

The ninth annual wheelbarrow race started from the Amman United in Glanaman to Ammanford and back again.

The event saw teams of two in fancy dress pushing each other in a wheelbarrow through the Amman Valley, stopping off in pubs along the way for a pint and raising cash for charity at the same time.

A whopping £800 was raised on the day with the money being split between Latch, the children’s cancer charity, NSPCC and Help for Heroes.

In a joint statement, organisers Nick Francis and Christian Madge said, “This year we made an extra effort to ensure the race could grow as a community event and invited Paul Pugh along to spread his inspiring message to the racers.

"It seemed very fitting considering the nature of our event.

“Both Paul and his message received a very warm welcome and it certainly got people thinking ahead of the race.”

The pair would like to thank Coleg Sir Gar for supplying music equipment, Paul Pugh for his time and inspiring speech, Ammanford Police for their attendance, South Wales Guardian for their great promotional contribution, Tia Jennings for documenting the day, the pubs for their hospitality, the racers for their high spirits, time and donations, and those who helped promote it via social media.

Next year will see the event reach a milestone 10 years and organisers are promising to take the event to another level.
