FUNDRAISERS in the Amman Valley are rolling out all the stops for this weekend’s annual wheelbarrow race.

The event is set to take place this Saturday, July 18, and will see teams of two pushing each other in a wheelbarrow through the Amman Valley, stopping off in pubs along the way to raise cash for charity – as well as a refreshing pint.

Now in its ninth year, fundraisers are hoping this year’s event will be bigger and better.

This year before the teams head off inspirational speaker Paul Pugh will be making a guest appearance to give a talk on alcohol related crime.

Since #PaulsPledge was launched last year, attack victim Paul has been taking his talk around the county showing the effects of alcohol related violence.

“We are honoured to have Paul on board,” said one of the organiser Nick Francis.

“Obviously this is a boozefuelled race, so it seemed apt to have Paul along before we head off through the Amman Valley.”

The charities to benefit this time around will be Glanaman youngster Hannah Poole and Latch – the children’s cancer charity – Help for Heroes and the NSPCC.

The event will be taking on the usual six-mile route, starting from the Amman United in Glanaman and heading to Ammanford, stopping off for a pint in each pub along the way, including the Cross Keys, Clwb Godre’r Mynydd Du and the Farmers in Glanaman, the Pick and Shovel, Welfare, the Cottage, the Square, Old Cross Inn and the Railway in Ammanford and the Red Kite Inn in Pontaman.

This year the race will take on a different approach.

On the way down to Ammanford teams will be fundraising by collecting money in their buckets and the race will then begin from the last pub – the first team back to Amman United wins.

“We always get a great response from members of the public along the way who always give generously,” said Nick.

“The pubs will also have sponsor forms at the bar, so they’ll be collecting well before we arrive.”

To enter the race just turn up on the day in your wackiest fancy dress costume, with a wheelbarrow, a partner and £5 to enter.

The event will start at Amman United, Glanaman at noon. The race is open to over 18s only
