THE entrance into Ammanford’s main public car park is to be relocated should proposals to improve safety at the Carregaman pedestrian crossing go ahead.

The move follows an emergency site visit at the crossing near the town’s Wilko store last week by road safety inspectors.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s parking services department is now to consider closing the existing car park entrance and relocating it to the link road between Carregaman Lane roundabout and Heol Wallasey roundabout, at the bottom of Quay Street.

The visit came after the last road accident at the crossing two week's ago when a 28-year-old woman collided with a car leaving her with broken bones.

Town shoppers have been calling for changes for a number of years. One Ammanford resident, who did not wish to be named, said the crossing situation was “going to get a lot worse before it gets better.”

“The county council just take money – from disabled blue badge holders – rather than ensure we don’t get killed on congested roads with poor crossing controls,” he said.

In the short term, Carmarthenshire County Council’s road safety manager John McEvoy has said he will be making changes to the existing problem at the crossing while a major redesign of the road layouts in Ammanford are considered.

“The investigation into the cause of the incident is on-going,” said Mr McEvoy.

“However, following a visit the road markings on the approaches to the crossing will be refreshed, and the centre line marking will be painted on a new red coloured mat.”

He went on to say that the existing LCD flashing halos at the crossing are sufficient enough to warn people of the position of the crossing.

However, Ammanford town councillor Wendy Evans, who has been campaigning for changes at the crossing, said the news was not a surprise.

“We’ve known for quite some time that they are looking at changing the entrance to the car park, but the question is when are they going to do it?

“Making small changes won’t make any difference – we want to see big changes.”
