LABOUR Assembly Member, for Neath, Gwenda Thomas has been campaigning for people to help with the devastation in Nepal.

Money raised will support the families affected by Saturday's 7.8 quake which struck west of the capital Kathmandu.

“We have all seen the distressing pictures on our televisions and on the internet of the scenes of devastation across Nepal," said Ms Thomas.

“Like all of my constituents I have been shocked at the destruction that has taken place across Nepal due to the earthquakes.

"I would encourage you to respond to this appeal in support of the vital work that the DEC are doing to provide much needed practical help”

The Chair of the DEC Cymru, Kirsty Davies-Warner said: “The Disasters Emergency Committee have launched an appeal to bring vital aid to this region.

"The scale of devastation in Nepal is huge, with buildings in major cities like Kathmandu badly damaged and more rural areas completely cut off as a result of avalanches sparked by the quake."

Money raised through this appeal will enable member agencies to scale up their response and support communities to rebuild once immediate needs have been met.

The DEC appeal will go out live tonight (Tues) on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Channel Five and other broadcast outlets.

The first £5 million of public donations to the Nepal Earthquake Appeal will be matched by UK aid through the Department for International Development.
