Within hours of being re-elected MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, Jonathan Edwards travelled to London to take part in the national VE Day commemoration at The Cenotaph.

Mr Edwards was present at the event, lead by HRH Prince Andrew, as Plaid Cymru representative and was one of just eight Members of Parliament who took part as official attendees.

The event proved all the more emotional for Mr Edwards following a recent conversation with a D-Day veteran from Llandybie who had taken part in the invasion of Normandy.

Mr Edwards said: “Remembrance services are one of the most important events in the political calendar. The commemoration of VE Day is just as important.

“This year’s event was even more poignant for me having recently met a Llandybie resident on the campaign trail who had fought on D-Day.

“You must have some incredible memories, I said to him after he had told me of his service. He told me that he had been trying ever since that day to forget them.

“I have to say his response knocked me for six. The magnitude of the war effort, the suffering and personal sacrifice given for our freedoms today can never be forgotten.

“It was, therefore, a huge honour to attend the national event this weekend.”
