A CWMGWLI driver crashed into a tree to avoid a badger after drinking two cans of beer, a court has been told.

Lauren Christy James, of Lledando Ty Farm, admitted driving while over the limit when she appeared at Llanelli Magistrates Court.

Sian Vaughan, prosecuting, told the court how police were called to a road accident at Thornhill Road at 11.45pm on Friday, March 20.

When they arrived at the scene, officers found the 20-year-old and her Hyundai car crashed into a tree.

“James told officers at the scene that she had swerved to avoid an badger which had run in front of her car,” said Ms Vaughan

“James admitted drinking two cans of beer at a friend’s house and did not think she would have been over the legal limit to drive.”

Tests showed she had 68 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Defence solicitor Kate Williams told the court that James worked full-time as a telesales operative.

James was "extremely sorry and embarrassed about her actions," Ms Williams said.

“Her actions are completely out of character as she has never done anything like his before.”

District Judge David Parsons disqualified James from driving for 18 months and fined her £270.

James was also ordered to pay £85 towards prosecution costs and a £27 victim surcharge.
