A Pontardawe woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious assault in the town yesterday evening.

The 32-year-old was arrested at the scene of the incident at Gwyrddgoed Road where her mother suffered multiple stab wounds.

The 63-year-old victim was taken to Morriston Hospital where her condition was described as "serious but stable".

A South Wales Police spokesman said officers were called to a property at around 5.45pm on Tuesday, April 14.

The victim's daughter is currently in custody at Swansea Central Police Station.

Detective Inspector Trudi Meyrick of Neath Port Talbot CID said: “This is a very serious incident which has understandably shocked the community.

"I can reassure local residents that a full investigation into the circumstances of what happened is continuing.”

A forensic examination of the scene was due to be carried out today (Wednesday, April 15) and officers will be in the area carrying out house-to-house enquiries.
