Warning! Here by dragons.

Or at least there are in Pantyffynnon, and multi-coloured monsters, chameleons, dens and a host of adventurous artefacts to keep young minds entertained and engaged.

The incredible creations are all down to the brilliant handiwork of Glanaman artist James Barker, who – along with wife Katrina – set up Splat Cymru to give youngsters hands-on experience of transforming their open spaces with fantastic, phantasmagorical constructions.

But unlike normal artwork, these aren’t just there to be admired.

James’ creations can be climbed, ridden, jumped on, crawled under and over, painted, and just about everything else a young imagination might come up with.

Katrina and former art teacher James came up with the idea of Supporting Pupils Learning through Art and Technology - Splat Cymru – as a means to engage children in the great outdoors and give them a sense of ownership of objects in public spaces and play areas.

“We wanted to get kids out of the house first and foremost, but also get them talking about what they were doing,” said Katrina.

“We wanted them to be involved in creating things and taking ownership of them.”

The creations are all made from recycled materials, such as car tyres, with the kids giving James a goal, which he must then sit down and design.

With an idea in place, the children then turn the shared vision into reality – and the results are nothing short of spectacular.

James and Katrina were invited to Pantyffynnon by GAP – Go and Play, the Swansea-based organisation which encourages youngsters to get outside and play, and the kids have welcomed them with open arms.

Splat Cymru plans to take their artistic engagements to a far wider audience over the coming months and hope to include creative minds of all ages, shapes and sizes.

“There are so many fantastic people in this valley, it is just a question of pulling them altogether getting them to scream and shout: “This is what we can do.”,” said James.

When the Splat dragons start roaring, it will be hard not to listen.
