Carmarthen East and Dinefwr has some of the most dangerous roads in the country, it has been revealed.

A report carried out by Direct Line Car Insurance and PACTS (an All-Party Parliamentary Group) found that road accidents in the constituency were 56 per cent more likely to involve death or seriously injury than the UK average.

The calculations were based on the number of accidents leading to death or serious injury relative to population.

The report concluded that accidents road accidents in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr had the tenth highest likelihood of leading to death or serious injury when measured against all other UK parliamentary constituencies.

The research showed that rural constituencies were far more likely to have above average results due to collisions occurring at far greater speeds than in more urban areas with roads having “fewer safety measures”.

Last year, the county of Carmarthenshire saw 11 road deaths – the joint highest figure in Wales, alongside Rhondda Cynon Taff.

There were also 89 serious injuries in road accidents and a further 519 minor injuries.

David Davies, Executive Director of PACTS said: “Road collisions remain a major cause of death and serious injury in Britain.

“Despite great improvements in emergency services and trauma care, thousands of victims of road collisions are left with life-changing injuries while the families of casualties also find their lives changed forever.”
