A CARING Amman Valley teenager is heading for Fiji this summer on a volunteer mission.

Nia Lowri Williams, from Brynaman, will fly out to the village of Nadi in June, where she will teach English to children aged three to 11.

The 19-year-old health and social care student at Craig College, Llanelli, has already had a taste of volunteer work – she currently volunteers at Ysgol y Bedol, Garnant, and Ysgol y Waun, Gwaun cae Gurwen.

She also helps out with Rainbows in Brynaman.

As well as her studies and volunteer work, Nia also works at the Mount Bar and Grill, Gwaun cae Gurwen, as a waitress.

“I am very busy, but I love working with children, that is why I decided to apply to volunteer abroad,” said Nia.

“I’m very excited about the trip. I have always wanted to go abroad to volunteer and when I saw this opportunity come up, I jumped at the chance.

“Nadi is one of the poorest parts of the island of Fiji, the work will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Nia will join a team of 22 people from around the globe who have applied for the mission.

With the help of her family, she is currently busy fundraising to help towards the cost of her trip.

“My flight is costing me £972 and my accommodation, plus food and transport in Fiji will be £1,400 for four weeks,” said Nia.

“I am also hoping to raise enough money to donate to the school, too.

“I have been busy baking cakes to sell at college – every bit helps.”

Nia’s dad has also been helping his daughter fundraise by taking on a mammoth cycle ride from Gwaun cae Gurwen to Aberaeron.

“Both my dad and mum have been an amazing support,” said Nia.

Nia’s mum, Bethan Jones, said she was nervous to see her daughter jet across the world on her own, but excited to see her take on a great opportunity.

“I’m her mum, so I’m obviously going to worry, but the trip is going to be a fantastic experience for Nia, I’m so proud of her,” said Bethan.

Nia’s latest fundraiser will be at Cwmgors RFC on Saturday, April 18, where rockers Peepshow will be performing. The event starts at 7pm, and Nia is welcoming donations for the raffle.

“I would like to thank everyone who has donated to my fund,” said Nia.

“The response so far has been amazing, I am incredibly grateful to everyone’s support.”
