A TYCROES wannabe broadcast journalist has been named runner-up in this year’s Breaking Into News initiative run by ITV News and Media Trust to discover new talent and help increase diversity in the newsroom.
Paul Davies was highly commended after developing a news report that highlighting the isolation and loneliness experienced by carers.
The 23-year-old produced the news report with support from mentor ITV Wales News journalist, James Crichton-Smith.
Working together they produced the report, which Paul then pitched to a high-profile judging panel of top TV journalists at the ITN studios along with eight other finalists.
The panel narrowed the finalists down to the top two and ITV newsreader Charlene White was given the deciding vote, naming Paul runner-up.
Finalist, Paul, said: “It’s a privilege to have been named as the Breaking Into News 2015 runner up.
"I was up against eight other fantastic finalists and am incredibly proud of the news report that I put together with the help of my mentor.”
Robin Elias, Managing Editor, ITV News, said: “The standard of entries for this year’s Breaking Into News was extremely high and all of the finalists displayed a great deal of talent.”
The competition offers 18-25 year olds the chance to be mentored by top broadcast journalists and supports young people who would not normally have this kind of opportunity.
