A Capel Hendre car mechanic who admitted possessing Class B and C drugs has been granted a conditional discharge at Llanelli Magistrates Court.

Shaun Craig Lane, of 6 Bryn Dreinog, pleaded guilty to possessing one gramme of cannabis, valued at £10, and one Diazepam tablet - which had not been prescribed to him.

Ellie Morgan, prosecuting, told magistrates that at 1am on Saturday, February 21, police officer’s stopped a Ford Fiesta driven by Lane and spoke to him through the window of his vehicle.

“Immediately the officer could detect a strong smell of cannabis coming from inside the car,” said Ms Morgan.

“The 21-year-old co-operated with a roadside breath test which gave a negative reading and was then searched by the officer – no drugs were found on him.

“Police believed there may be drugs concealed in the car so they called for the assistance of Huggy - a police sniffer dog.”

During the search, Huggy gave an indication near the gear stick – officers then searched the area and discovered a plastic bag with cannabis inside.

Lane was then arrested and taken to Llanelli police station where he was searched again - a single Diazepam tablet was discovered concealed inside Lane’s underpants.

“He told officers he did not know it was there and said "it must have got caught inside” his underpants when he was dressing that morning,” added Ms Morgan.

Defence solicitor, Steve Lloyd, told the court that while many people use this drug for leisure and recreational purposes - Lane smoked cannabis purely to reduce his anxiety.

“This incident has made him deal with his condition and he has sought help from his GP,” said Mr Lloyd.

“He is employed as a full-time car mechanic and does not want this incident to have a negative impact on his work.”

“He has the full support of his family - and does realise this behaviour has to stop if he ever wants to change.”

Granting Lane a 12-month conditional discharge, magistrates told him: “We are not impressed with the report given by the police at the time of your arrest.

“We are however, going to grant you a conditional discharge – but if you appear in this court again your actions will return to haunt you.”

Lane was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
