A GLANANAM mum was left disappointed on Mothering Sunday after her doting son was unable to buy her a Welsh versed card from Tesco.

Stewart Herbert, like so many others, wanted to surprise his mum on Sunday with a Welsh card and a bunch of daffodils, but failed in his endeavour after the giant supermarket chain apparently “ran out of stock.”

“When I could not find a Welsh card amongst all the English cards that were left on the shelf, I asked to speak to the duty manager,” said Stewart.

“After we searched through the stacks of English cards the duty manager came to the conclusion that the store must have ran out of Welsh language cards and they only had English versions left.”

In essence, Stewart was left with two choices, either buy an English written card for his mum or leave empty handed.

Bitterly disappointed, Stewart then went to the customer service desk to buy his mum a bunch of flowers and again queried the lack of Welsh language cards in the store.

“I was stunned at the reaction from the customer service manager,” said Stewart.

“Her attitude was just shocking – she basically told me that I had left it far too late to expect to buy my mum a Welsh Mother’s Day card from the supermarket.

“And to add insult to injury she also went on to say that other independent shops sold Welsh language greeting cards and maybe I should have tried to buy one from them – not just Tesco.”

In protest, Stewart refused to buy an English card from the store and was then left to explain to his mum why she would not receive her annual gift on such a special day.

“My son came to see me on Mother’s Day, he was so upset with the way he was treated by a member of staff at Tesco,” said mum Margaret.

“But when he told me what had happened, I said he should not have bought the flowers in protest either.

“If there were so many English cards left on the shelf, surely that speak volumes, Tesco should, after all, be more efficient with their supply and demand.

Ammanford’s Tesco Store Manager, Alison Jones, said: “We monitor our stock levels very carefully, and did not expect to run out of Welsh Mother’s Day cards.

“We will also look back at our trading figures and increase the amount of cards we keep in stock if the figures from this years sales deem it necessary to do so.”

Tesco spokesperson said, “We work hard to deliver great service to our customers, especially at important times of year like Mother’s Day.

“We’ve apologised for running out of Welsh Mother’s day cards at our Ammanford store and understand our colleague was trying to be helpful rather than cause any offence.”
