WORK is well under way on Ammanford’s newest food joint.

The property, the former Home, Garden and Leisure shop, at the bottom of Quay Street – locally known as “Harrods” – was purchased at auction in October 2013 by local businessman Khadim Hussain.

Mr Hussain plans to turn the disused building into a cafe and restaurant plus function room, serving Pakistani, Indian and British cuisine, including Sunday roasts, pizza and pasta.

The restaurant will be a new project for the Hussain family, who also run fuel stations in both Glanaman and Trebanos among their many business ventures.

Mr Hussain’s son, Cwmaman deputy mayor Shahid Hussain, is excited to see the plans coming to life.

“I am really looking forward to seeing the final project,” he commented.

“We are aiming to get the restaurant finished by early summer, but we don’t really want to set a date in stone as yet.

“My sister will be running most of the day-to-day operations and handling the menu. It is a very exciting time for us as a family.”

Cllr Hussain said he has certainly felt a buzz in the air since work started on the building two weeks ago.

“We have had many people approaching us and looking forward to see it open.

“And of course, we will be offering jobs to locals. That is something we as a family business pride ourselves on – local jobs for local people.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone along to an open event, which will be later on in the year.”
