ONE of Ammanford's most iconic haunts could soon be given a new lease of life in a bid to turn the town into food venue to rival Llandeilo.

Park Cafe, the former well-loved chip shop known to all as Jonah's, could soon be re-opened as an Italian restaurant after plans were submitted to Carmarthenshire County Council this week.

The proposals would see the former fast food outlet on Wind Street refurbished to create an Italian eatery, which will boast a new, modern frontage and external dining area at the rear.

The cafe has remained empty since its closure a few years ago and consists of two joined buildings.

The plans, submitted by agents Speake Design of Swansea on behalf of applicant DWS Wholesale, would see the ground floor converted into one restaurant and bar with dining on the ground and first floors.

The external appearance of the property would also change with the building being clad in reclaimed timber and brown marble.

Permission for new roof on existing rear extensions, including one roof light is also being sought. There would also be a rear external eating area, with views of the park behind.

In the report included with the application, Llanelli based DWS Wholesale, stated that the restaurant — that would also provide takeaway pizza — would create jobs and is much needed in the town.

The report states the scheme will provide a new independent food retailer offering ‘real authentic home-cooked food’ and not a ‘faceless commercial chain.’

The report stated: “The new elevation will change the muddled frontage into a contemporary shop front, re-energising the street scene.

“Ammanford needs a new restaurant to rival the best that Llandeilo and other neighbouring towns and cities can offer.

“The new business will create the equivalent of 22 new full-time jobs, much needed in the area. It will be a hub for local residents to eat out, enjoy some great food, and bring people together.’
