The search for the 11-year-old boy believed to have fallen into the River Towy at Carmarthen was continuing this afternoon with officers focussing their search on the river and riverbank area, a Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman has confirmed.

Emergency services received reports that the boy had gone into the water near Tanerdy yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon at 4pm.

A major search operation was launched which included two dedicated swift water response teams from the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

The teams, from Carmarthen and Swansea, are made up of specialist search and rescue trained officers who use equipment such as specially adapted inshore boats and camera equipment that can assist with the search effort.

The Coastguard, an RAF Seaking helicopter and inshore lifeboat teams from Tenby, Llanstephan, Ferryside and Burry Port have also been involved in the search.

Morning than 50 people were said to have been taking part in the search earlier today.

At a press conference this morning, Dyfed-Powys Police Inspector Eric Evans said he was "not 100 per cent sure" that the boy had gone into the river.

Insp Evans said there was always an "element of doubt" when dealing with children.

A spokesman from Dyfed-Powys-Police said the search was continuing and that, based on information received, officers were focussing their search “on the river and riverbank”.

The spokesman added that boy’s family had asked for privacy.
