STAFF at one of Ammanford’s leading chain stores have been rocked by the news that the store is set to close inside two months.

Workers at the Quay Street branch of beauty and fashion retailer Superdrug were informed on Monday that the outlet would shut its doors inside nine weeks, the Guardian can reveal.

The shock news will result in the loss of six jobs and deals a massive blow to hopes that the town centre was becoming more vibrant in the wake of recent festivals and events.

A source within the shop told the Guardian: “This is devastating news.

“The staff working at the store had no idea whatsoever this was going to happen.

“It comes at the worst possible time, with many people still struggling to pay off Christmas debts.

“Staff at the shop have been told the shop will close in approximately nine weeks.”

Superdrug is the United Kingdom’s second-largest beauty and health retailer, with more than 800 stores operating in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Ammanford’s Chamber of Trade secretary, Angela Phillips, said the closure was extremely disappointing news for the town.

“News of any shop closure in the town is very sad,” said Mrs Phillips.

“Times are hard for any business in this economic climate.

“I feel terrible for all those who have lost their jobs.

“I am confident - County Council will do their utmost in promoting Ammanford and another large retailer will take over the store very soon.”

Superdrug was contacted by the Guardian, but was unable to respond to inquiries before going to press.

The closure is not thought to be part of a UK down-sizing of the company’s operations.
