DYFED-POWYS Police figures have revealed a 25 per cent drop in violent crime in Ammanford over the festive season compared to the previous year.

The figures show during December 2014 there were 30 offences of violence against a person, of which 12 were alcohol-related.

During the same period in 2013 there were 40 offences of violence against a person, of which 22 were alcohol-related.

The decrease has been welcomed by police in the town.

Sergeants Teresa Ross and Kerry Scoberg said: “We are pleased to have recorded a reduction in alcohol-fuelled violence in December.

"Police in Ammanford provided a high-visibility presence in our town centre throughout the Christmas party season working closely with our partners, door staff and licensees to ensure party-goers enjoyed their night out in safety with minimum disruption from a minority of troublemakers.

“This action was further supported by the launch of the anti-violence campaign Paul’s Pledge. This attracted high levels of media and social media activity and certainly got people locally talking about the impact of alcohol-fuelled violence.

“We will be continuing the work of this campaign throughout the coming months visiting schools, colleges and youth clubs to spread the message further.”

#PaulsPledge is an anti-violence campaign led by Paul Pugh, now aged 34, who was assaulted on a night out almost eight years ago. He was left in a coma for two months following the unprovoked attack outside the Old Cross Inn on January 6, 2007, for which four men were jailed.

Despite the fact that he will never fully recover from injuries that left him having to learn how to walk and talk again, Paul has used his experience to campaign against alcohol-fuelled violence.

As part of the campaign, Paul has filmed a 15-minute documentary, which starts with the 999 call made to emergency services after the attack. This is available to view on YouTube and is being shown to young people throughout the county in a bid to reduce alcohol-fuelled violence.

•Take Paul’s Pledge – sign up to show your support to his campaign and vow to never condone violent behaviour, to walk away from aggression and violence and encourage friends and family to do the same. •Send us pictures of yourself wearing a #PaulPledge wristband from all across the country and the globe to @swguardian or via our Facebook page to show your support.
