THE Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for Carmarthenshire.

A low-pressure vortex, dubbed Storm Rachel, is set to hit the country tonight with possible floods, power cuts and building damage.

Severe gales of up to 50mph are expected this evening and into tomorrow (Thursday) morning while coastal areas will be battered by storm-force gales nearing 100mph.

Yesterday’s snowfall made driving difficult for many motorists in the county.

Just before 8pm last night a county gritter lorry overturned. Both men on-board were unhurt and no other vehicles were involved.

Carmarthenshire Council executive board member responsible for Technical Services Colin Evans said: “Thankfully no-one was hurt in this incident. I would like to thank our crews for their work.

"They are out in difficult weather conditions at all hours and are doing a great job in keeping the county moving.

“This incident will not have an effect on any future gritting as we have reserve vehicles.

“Gritters will remain on primary routes until conditions are judged to be safe.”
