MEMBERS of Ammanford Walkers Club and Llandeilo Ramblers placed a cross of poppies on the memorial stone near Llanddeusant where a four-engined Avro Lancaster bomber exploded during a night exercise.

On Remembrance Sunday a service was held to honour the eight crew members who died in the crash.

Ammanford Walking Club founder member, Wyn Jenkins, said: “Both Ammanford Walkers and Llandeilo Ramblers have attended a service at the location every year on Remembrance Sunday since 1993, often in atrocious weather conditions.

“There were also several surviving relatives of the crew who attended a most moving service conducted by the Rev Group Captain JS Thomas of Llandybie.”

The placing of the memorial and the presence of the relatives was the culmination of many years of research undertaken by Mr Alun Evans.

Mr Jenkins pinpointed the location of the crash with several members of the club assisting to prepare the foundations for the memorial stone.

The stone was airlifted to the mountain in 1993, the 50th anniversary of the crash.

Ammanford RAFA member Mr Gerry Williams and British Legion representative Major Ken Burton were responsible for arranging the donation of the poppy wreath.
