AMMANFORD could be snowballing into the record books once again as the town prepares to set the record for the largest gathering of snowmen.

More than 500 people have already registered for the event, which is being held on November 29th as part of the town’s first ever Wonders of Christmas Festival.

The organisers are urging one last push to ensure that they don’t only beat the record but smash it.

As the current record stands at 366 snowmen, Ammanford looks set to follow the success of 2012 when the town entered the Guinness Book of Records after 762 elves gathered on Quay Street, breaking a record that had previously been held by New York City.

The record attempt is being held at the piazza, at the top of the Arcade, from 3.30pm, when the official count will be followed by a special snowman parade down to Quay Street in time for the Christmas lights switch-on at 5.30pm.

To help out, iSmooth Community Café on College Street and Try-Angles on Baptist Lane are now selling top hats at just 50p each. The top hats will also be available on the day.

Registration can be done online at the Wonders of Christmas Facebook page or via iSmooth with the paper registration form, which you will find in the festival guide.

Online registration closes on November 28th at 11.59pm but entrants will be accepted on the day at the piazza from 3-3.45pm.

Erika Beynon, of iSmooth and Ammanford Chamber of Trade said: “Since we began we have had an aim of 500 snowmen, which would certainly see us get the record if they all turn up.

“But there is always room for more and in fact we would love to see double that number on the day which would ensure not only do we set the record but make it difficult for anyone to break it.

“Ammanford would really be able to celebrate if we got into the Guinness Book of Records for a second time and it certainly would ensure the Wonders of Christmas festival ends on a magical note.”
