A SWANSEA Valley man inspired by his late mother’s charity work, has organised a Christmas event in her memory.

Former Ystradgynlais town councillor, Margaret Thomas passed away on May 10, the same day she received a letter from the Cabinet Office, informing her she had been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours.

As a well-respected councillor, teacher, volunteer, mother and grandmother, Margaret raised thousands of pounds for a number of charities over the years.

Following in his mother’s footsteps, son Gareth is now taking on a charity event inspired by his mothers’ efforts.

The Swansea Valley’s first Santa shuffle is set to take place on Sunday, December 21.

“The shuffle is a three-kilometre Santa-themed fancy dress walk leaving Ystradgynlais rugby ground at 11am,” said Gareth.

“This will be a family walk, wheelchair and pushchair friendly.”

Proceeds raised on the day will support two local charities, Pob Cam I Cam, supporting Swansea kids cancer charity, and Sblash a Sbri, a local swim and playgroup for babies and toddlers.

“I got my inspiration for the event from my mother, who dedicated her life to helping her community,” said Gareth.

Following the walk, a limited number of tickets are available for a Frozen-themed after party, with special guest, Princess Elsa.

Activities on the day include face painting, hot dogs and cake sale, plus New Age Photography will also be in Santa's Grotto.
