A GLANAMAN teenager with a passion for fitness who gives up her Saturday mornings to ensure youngsters get in a shape while having fun has been nominated for the Carmarthenshire Young Sports Volunteer of the Year award.

Angharad Barnes, from Parc Bryn Rhos, spends her weekend mornings at the gym putting classes of primary school-age children through their paces while most of her class-mates are still asleep.

The 16-year-old sixth-form pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman supervises workout sessions between 10am and 11.30am every Saturday at Funkypump Fitness, hosted by Primal Gym, in Ammanford.

“Angharad is one of a kind,” said fellow volunteer Clare Edwards, who nominated her for the award.

Thanks to the efforts of Angharad and the volunteer team, the gym has been able to set up a groundbreaking Kids’ Club where youngsters are able to enjoy fun craft activities before working out in 30-minute exercise classes.

The work-outs see Angharad guiding the youngsters and enabling them to take part in some of the exercises involved within the main Funkypump adults class, but on a smaller scale.

Angharad’s particular area of expertise involves taking the young Funkypumpers through so light boxing training.

“Angharad plays a big part in helping the kids develop their confidence and self-esteem.

“They become energetic, motivated and creative, while at the same time helping boost their social skills in a friendly, controlled and safe environment,” said Clare.

“The club, which was set up around two years ago, has brought a new concept for children in Carmarthenshire - a kids exercise club using safe boxing moves.

“Angharad works with children to develop their boxing exercise techniques.

“Angharad gives up her time to help the team make sure all the kids have the best time possible - all for the ‘love of the job’.

“She really is a very valued member of our team.

“She is a wonderful volunteer who gives up her Saturday every week, without fail.

“Her passion for working with young people and volunteering makes a huge difference to the club.

“She has developed an excellent relationship with all the members of the kid’s club. – and the kids really look up to her.

“She is committed to making a difference and I really hope she gets to win the volunteer of the year award because she really deserves it.”

All nominations for the title will be assessed by a panel and the winners will be announced at the Carmarthenshire Sports Personality Awards on January, 30, 2015
