SWASEA Valley school children became forensic scientists for the day recently and were set the task of solving a fictitious murder mystery.

Over 100 year five pupils joined the science investigation team at neighbouring secondary school Ysgol Maesydderwen on November 3 to try to solve the gruesome murder of a sixth form student.

The pupils heard details of the crime and the evidence collected. Investigations included analysis of fibres, footprints, stomach contents and blood.

The event gave pupils the chance to learn about the fascinating world of chemistry and were given the opportunity to use high level scientific equipment such as microscopes, Bunsen burners and food testing chemicals.

Head of Science, Faye Brodrick, said, “The pupils from our primary schools never cease to amaze me. They have handled complex equipment and chemicals in a mature and safe manner whilst enjoying piecing together the evidence to find the killer.

"These children are a credit to our community and I am excited about the future prospects for continued exam and career success in our area and at Ysgol Maesydderwen.”

Nearly all of the pupils from Ysgol Golwg y Cwm, Ysgol y Cribarth, Ysgol Bro Tawe and Ysgol Gymraeg Dyffryn y Glowyr correctly identified the criminal using their problem solving skills.
