AN AMMANFORD schoolgirl who cooked up an idea to bake and sell cakes for charity has raised more than £1,000 in just a few days.

Eight-year-old Diaz Tinnuche was staying at her aunt Tracy’s house watching Channel 4’s Stand up to Cancer, and was so touched by the stories she decided she wanted to raise money for the charity.

With help from her mum, local artist Cara Gibson, and aunt Tracy Tinnuche, Diaz baked up a batch of cakes and took them to Tracy’s Gorslas hair salon, Nucci’s, last Saturday, November 8.

“Diaz loves baking and her favourite programme is Choccywoccydoodah – the television programme featuring the Brighton chocolate shop – so it came as no surprise when she asked to bake cakes for charity,” said Cara.

The Ysgol Parcyrhun pupil took a batch of cakes into school last Friday and raised £22 in her first day of sales.

“My friends and teachers have been very supportive,” said Diaz. “They think I’m doing a very kind thing.”

Following Saturday’s cake-a-thon Diaz’s total has reached an incredible £1,160 from cakes sales and donations to her just giving page.

“Diaz was dragging people in from the streets, asking them politely if they wanted to buy a cake – she has such a charm about her,” said Cara.

“We moved onto the Phoenix, Gorslas and the The Stag and Pheasant, Carmel where a further £365 was raised.

“We are overwhelmed with the total so far.”

Diaz said she cannot thank everyone enough for their donations.

“The chocolate fudge cake and lemon drizzle cake went down very well,” said Diaz.

“I hoped to raise around £250, I never thought it would be more than £1,000.

“Dadcu thought I wouldn’t make more than £80.

“I want to thank everyone who bought my cakes.”

But for now Diaz will be hanging up her apron and taking a well-earned rest.

“Mum is going to be baking thank you cakes for my friends in school, but I’m going to have a little break from baking,” she said.

“I am incredibly proud of Diaz. She has a strong mind for such a little girl, I think she will do very well in life,” added Cara.

Diaz’ aunt Tracy Tunniche would also like to thank her customers for the support.

“When Diaz and I came up with idea, I never thought it would be so successful. It is all down to a wonderful little girl, who has done something amazing,” she said.
