AHEAD of the upcoming Autumn Internationals, Amman Valley rugby legend Shane Williams will appear in an ad released by Guinness this week, set to rally the Welsh fans.

Guinness will release four pieces of contents for each of the Home Nations with the Welsh ad airing for the first time in the UK on TV today.

Rather than focussing on the physical attribute of brute strength normally found in rugby adverts, these four films look to inner qualities like humility, dedication, self-belief, and irrepressible spirit. The campaign celebrates the triumph of these qualities, which have helped the ads’ heroes leave a lasting mark on the game.

Shane Williams: Mind Over Matter, focuses on the winger’s determination to prove wrong the people who told him he was too small to succeed in rugby.

Written off by coaches, Shane persevered and when he was finally given his chance, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

His career then spanned many years, breaking try-scoring records and winning championships and personal accolades in the process.

“It was tough being told that I wasn’t going to make it, just because of my size, but I always believed in myself,” said Shane.

“Every setback made me more determined to succeed. Hopefully my story can inspire other rugby players - it’s proof you don’t need to be built like George North or Alex Cuthbert to make it on the wing!”

Speaking to Guiness Wales rugby captain Sam Warburton said, “Shane is a legend in Wales and throughout the rugby world.

“Everybody thought wingers had to be a certain height and a certain build, so Shane kept being told that he was too small to make it. He never gave up, kept working hard on his game and eventually when he got his chance, seized it with both hands and proved everybody wrong.

“He had such amazing drive and even when he was in his mid-thirties, just before he retired, he was one of the fastest and fittest players in the Welsh squad.”

The Welsh ad will air for the first time on TV today, November 5.
