AN AMMANFORD town councillor is calling on the county council to act over a new school crossing fearing “it is only a matter of time before a child is hit by a car”.

The crossing has been laid out for pupils of Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman and runs through the Co-Op car park from the top of the Arcade.

Councillor Chris Jones has spoken of his disappointment about the lack of concern shown to the neighbouring schools, Ysgol Feithrin Rhydaman and Ysgol Bro Banw, where no crossing has been laid out.

After a meeting with Mrs Davies, headteacher of Ysgol Bro Banw, Cllr Deian Harries and county council transport manager John McEvoy, were all in agreement an extra crossing was needed for all schools.

But Cllr Jones feels the crossing is still not safe enough.

In an open letter to Ammanford town councillors Cllr Jones said he was “extremely concerned” about the safety of the children and feels the current crossing and proposed further crossings are ‘putting children’s lives at risk’.

“The current crossing cuts through several parking bays and across each roadway through the car park,” said Cllr Jones.

“The result is children will be walking or running between parked cars into the roadway, and visibility for cars will be poor.

Cllr Jones is now urging county councillors to address the situation quickly.

“This area of the car park should be closed to traffic until the safety of the children can be assured,” he said.

Transport manager John McEvoy said the authority had agreed to install rubber calming strips on approaches to the pathway.

“We are committed to provide a safe walked pathway and involve those concerned in the design process,” Mr McEvoy said.
