GARNANT branch of the Royal British Legion is set to celebrate its 90th birthday with a World War One commemoration event.

The branch was founded by the grandfather of Carmarthenshire county council leader Kevin Madge in 1924.

David Brinley Madge served in World War One along with Kevin’s other grandfather Evan Morgan.

“The men who went into combat during World War One paid the ultimate sacrifice, many of us wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them,” said Cllr Madge.

“But we must not forget those who came back and were never the same again,” he added.

Over the years Cllr Madge has been president, poppy secretary and is currently chairman of the branch.

“It’s been a huge community effort to reach our 90th birthday. The local people are the reason it is still going,” said Kevin.

“The challenge now is reach our 100th birthday,” he added.

Over the years Garnant British Legion has made a number of contributions to the community, most recently they have set up a new war memorial in Ysgol y Bedol.

“President Nevin Anthony was the driving force behind the project,” said Cllr Madge.

Husband and wife John and Pauline Barker, the vice chairman and secretary of the association said they hope to reach out to those in the Valley to attend a commemoration event – The Spirit of 1914 – on October 11 in Christ Church, Garnant.

“Everyone is welcome to the event, whether you have a grandfather or great uncle who served in the war, or if you just want to come along and remember those who fought, we are encouraging everyone to come along,” said John.

The programme will include choir singers from Ysgol y Bedol and Cor Meibion Dyffryn Aman and Gwaun Cae Gurwen Silver Band plus readings reflecting the spirit of 1914.

Before the event, Garnant British Legion members are invited to attend Garnant club Tuesday, October 7 at 7.15pm for a special birthday meeting.
