Penygroes turned out in force this morning (Friday) to bid farewell to Jean Aldwinkle at her final Macmillan Coffee morning.

Dedicated Jean started the coffee mornings at her house in 2004 and has since raised well over £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Jean will soon be leaving Penygroes and moving back to Leicester to be near her family.

In an emotional speech Jean thanked all the residents of Penygroes for their support and appealed for someone to take over the running of the event next year.

Jean was praised for all her hard work by MP and Penygroes resident Jonathan Edwards as well as Sue Reece, the Fundraising Manager for Macmillan.

Mr Edwards said: “The length and breadth of Carmarthenshire communities are hosting coffee mornings.

“I say each and every year that some of the cakes and sweets baked by local residents can easily put the Great British Bake Off to shame.

“I’m always impressed at how the small, selfless actions of a few can make a huge difference to the work of Macmillan Cancer Support.

“This year I made a particular effort to attend the Penygroes event and pay tribute to the efforts of Jean who has helped raise over £10,000 for cancer support.”
