THE FORMER skipper of the Penybanc Panthers women's rugby side, forced to retire due to injury, has made it to the final of Miss Upcoming Model Girl UK, 2014.

Exchanging rugby-boots, muddy pitches, and hours of training for high-heels, glitz, and glamour, Gemma Davies, was chosen from thousands of hopefuls to get to final.

The 30-year-old will take to the catwalk at Daresbury Park Hotel, Warrington, on Sunday, October 26.

“After retiring from rugby, I needed something different to focus on,” said Gemma.

“My friend Malcolm Modèle encouraged me to get into the modelling industry so I thought I would give it a try.”

“However, I thought I’d take a different approach and become more of role model.

“Events such as The Miss Upcoming Model judge you on your looks, achievements and personality, essentially the whole package.”

The self-confessed tom-boy began her rugby career in 2010 when she started playing for Amman United Girls before signing up with the high-flying Penybanc Panthers, but was forced to retire at the end of last season after an injury during an away game.

“I was extremely gutted when I was told I couldn’t play anymore, but I’m so proud of how well the team went on to do,” she said.

“Modelling is a bit different to rugby, and I think I’ve shocked a few people with my new career path, but I am relishing the challenge.”

Travelling with Gemma to the event will be Ammanford-based hair and beauty experts Bedazzled.

“I am so proud to be Gamma’s main sponsor and stylist,” said Bedazzled’s owner Lisa Bryan.

“Myself and staff members will use our skills to create a gorgeous finalist that will represent Ammanford town and the salon.

“All the team are completely behind Gemma, we know she will do fantastic.”
