An inspirational Brynaman schoolgirl collected a prestigious Diana Award for being a courageous citizen at a glitzy ceremony held in London’s HSBC’s headquarters.

Tyler Payne has, since the death of her mother, been a cornerstone of support for her brother who has learning difficulties.

She has also given her time freely to support disabled students and children with dyslexia, enticing them to a book club she set-up with free doughnuts .

The star pupil who attends Ysgol Dyffryn Aman is also an active school council member, and a Peer Mentor.

“I was nominated by my English GCSE teacher Miss McNeil,” said Tyler.

“I only told my closest friends about the nomination, just in case I didn’t win.

“But I was so happy when I found out that I had chosen for the award.”

The Diana Award, the only charity that carries the Princess’ name, was established in 1999 as an official legacy to the late Princess’ belief in the power of young people to change the world.

To mark the 17th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, the Diana Award is publicly recognising 17 young people, from across the UK.

Many of these young people were not born when Princess Diana died 17 years ago but they carry their Diana Award with pride and admiration for the woman whose memory it was set up in.

“As we approach the 17th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death it is heartening to know that her legacy lives on through the lives of thousands of young people who are involved in social action and changing their communities for the better,” said Tessy Ojo, CEO of Diana Award

These young people whether they’re anti-bullying champions, campaigners, fundraisers or volunteers, demonstrate that young people have the power to change their world when supported and empowered.

We are proud that over the past 15 years we have empowered over 41,000 young people to make a difference to their communities.”

The 17-year-old, was presented with her award by Britain’s Got Talent runners-up Twist and Pulse.

Ysgol Dyffryn Aman headmaster Steve Perks said: “Tyler has done exceptionally well to win this award, and I know she thoroughly enjoyed the day, and certainly deserves it for all work she has done.”
