Interesting to see the map in the Guardian of the Swansea cycle routes.

Let us hope the police are taking notice as well.

For although I am a militant supporter of cyclists and their right to use the road, even though I am too old and the hills round my way are too steep to get the bike out of the shed, I am not happy with Swansea’s scheme of letting adults zoom about on the pavement.

Even I have been startled by cycle hogs zooming past much too close when I am going to cricket at St Helens.

From the map I see they also encourage people to ride from Ystalyfera into Lower Brynaman, from Pontardawe over to Neath, and into Pontarddulais from Gorseinon.

Yet nowhere on those roads can I remember dedicated cycle paths of the kind that were regularly neglected by councils when I was a lad.

Are they really suggesting cyclists should ride on the pavement? That’s OK for kids, who should be kept in safe areas, but surely it is illegal for adults.

Education for road users - and a more serious driving test, should help avoid incidents like when a friend from Pontarddulais was knocked off his bike while undertaking a lorry.

There is a proper cycleway following the old railway line from Cross Hands into Llanelli; and plenty of other disappeared railways around Brynaman and up the Swansea Valley. Surely they should be being developed rather than our pavements being nicked.
