A 90-year-old Powys hill farmer has been killed in a fatal road accident on the A483 between Llanwrtyd Wells and Llandovery.

William John Brynley Powell - known locally as Bryn – died following a two-vehicle collision just outside the Powys village at 3.55pm on Saturday, August 9.

A passenger in Mr Powell’s vehicle was taken to hospital as was the driver and passenger of the second car. All three are having their injuries assessed.

The road was closed from Beulah in the east to all vehicles, and from Cynghordy in the west to cars and from Llandovery for large vehicles for most of the afternoon and evening following the collision.

Mr Powell was born and lived in the parish of Abergwesyn near Llanwrtyd Wells.

A spokesman for his family described Mr Powell as a traditional Welsh hill farmer, a proud Welshman and proud Welsh speaker with a passion for driving.

Mr Powell was a regular visitor to Llandovery and drove to the town twice a week to have lunch and buy freshly baked bread.

He had been in Llandovery prior to the collision and was making his way home at the time of the accident.

A Dyfed-Powys police spokesman said officers would like to thank those members of the public who stopped to assist the people in the vehicles.

They are also calling for anyone who saw the collision, or who may be able to provide information, to call them on 101.
