FUNDRAISERS in the Amman Valley are putting the wheels in motion for one of the biggest charity events of the summer.

The annual wheelbarrow race is set to take place on Saturday, July 12 and will see teams of two pushing each other in a wheelbarrow through the valley, stopping off in the local pubs, collecting money for charity.

The idea started back in 2007. The Amman united youth were looking to do something for pre-season training with a bit of fun.

“The thought of fitness and alcohol would appeal to most rugby players,” said Amman United player Christian Madge.

“In the first four years it was a just a handful of wheelbarrows entering, then more and more people have entered throughout the years.”

As the event got bigger it was decided it was a good idea to start fundraising for charity, so each year the event raises money for a different cause – this year the chosen charity is local girl Hannah Rose vs Leukaemia.

To enter the annual wheelbarrow race just turn up on the day with a wheelbarrow, a partner and £5 to enter.

The event will start at Amman United, Glanaman at 12.30pm. You will then race through the valley for six miles, stopping in each pub for a pint and collect as much money as you can for charity.

Fancy dress is mandatory. “The crazier the fancy dress the better,” said Christian.

“Some of the entrants dress their wheelbarrow, which we strongly encourage.

“The event is all about having fun as well as raising money for Hannah Rose Vs Leukaemia.”

The race is open to over 18s only.
