A Garnswllt couple celebrated their platinum anniversary in style last week – with a card of congratulations from the Queen.

Noah and Nansi Miles welcomed friends and family from across the globe to a special celebration marking their 70th year together at the Garnswllt Activity Centre. The centre is the renovated Garnswllt primary school where Noah, 95, spent his schooldays.

They couple married at Noddfa Chapel, Garnswllt, just 11 days after D-Day in 1944 having begged, borrowed and swapped rations for the occasion.

They then set off to honeymoon in Aberystwyth but returned home after just a few days to make the most of the hot weather for haymaking.

Lifelong Swansea City fan Noah and Nansi, 93, had four daughters, Laura, Delyth , Nina and Eiry, though sadly Nina passed away in 2011.

They also have 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The couple farmed Gerdinen Isaf farm, in Cwmgerdinen, for many years after World War Two and were well-known figures in the Brynhyfryd and Treboeth areas of Swansea where they sold their produce on the doorsteps.

The decided to leave their life on the land in 1958 and Noah went to work at the Baltic Sawmills - and then, until the age of 78, at David Matthews Tinplates in Pontarddulais.

Nansi meanwhile worked for a number of years at the Delanair Factory in Ammanford.

As a youngster, Nansi delivered milk from a pony and float in the Betws.

Noah has helped care for Nansi since she suffered a stroke six years ago.

The couple enjoyed a week-long celebration, culminating in Saturday’s grand reception, and were overwhelmed by the generosity of friends, family and the local community who came together to help them celebrate their special day.

They received almost 100 anniversary cards – many of which were home-made because it is impossible to buy platinum celebration cards in the shops - including one very special one from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.
