PUB giants JD Wetherspoon this week scotched rumours they are looking into the possibility of building a new pub on the site of Ammanford's old police station in College Street.
The Guardian understands regeneration chiefs and business leaders had expressed hopes of attracting the chain to the town.
One businessman, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: "There's a widespread feeling among us that a Wetherspoons smack-bang in the middle of Ammanford could work wonders for the town's night-time economy."
But in a statement issued on Monday, a J D Wetherspoon spokesman said: "I can confirm that Wetherspoon is NOT in discussions regarding the police station."
It is not the first time J D Wetherspoon have been linked to Ammanford.
Back in November 2012 the Guardian disclosed they had shown an interest in taking over the site of The Cottage Inn in Wind Street, only for talks to break down six months later.
Although some traders had expressed fears that the opening of a Wetherspoons pub would hit their businesses, Mrs Elaine Temblett , landlady of the Cottage Inn at the time, argued that the opposite would prove the case.
"They will bring more people into Ammanford," she said. "I'm convinced the town will have more winners than losers."
