All Saints set to host World War One commemoration vigil service.

The service is part of a programme of summer events scheduled for the church, which is currently subject to a major renovation project.

Despite the ongoing works, All Saints Church will be open for weekly services, starting from Sunday, June 1, when Holy Communion will be taken at 10.15am.

Work has continued behind the scenes at the 99-year-old church throughout the winter months with the Repair and Regeneration Committee’s project team exploring every avenue to transform the venue into a 21st century community centre.

“The project team has been busy submitting grant applications and fundraising,” said project manager Peter Pemberton.

“The grant application processes is long drawn out.

“Responses to the various stages of application have been positive and encouraging with several applications already being successful.”

Meanwhile, practical work has also been taking place with the railings receiving a much need coat of paint as part of the Probation Service’s community scheme.

“We thank them for their involvement and also thanks to the local businesses for donating the paint,” said Mr Pemberton.

“We would also like to thank the effort of volunteers Mr and Mrs Robert Davies, of Brynmawr Lane, in maintaining the lawns surrounding the church and placing attractive pots of flowers at the entrance.”

All Saints Church is intrinsically linked with the men of Ammanford who took part in World War One with the clock tower being erected in 1923 to commemorate the fallen.

The vigil service will present members of the community and various organisations in the town with the opportunity to pay their respects.

The Remembrance Board in the tower entrance will be on view however the entrance itself will not be accessible due to the ongoing repair work.

A date for the service is yet to be decided.
